Local Veterans Honored at First Honor Flight of the Collier County Chapter

In celebration of Veteran's Day last month, the sacrifices our local veterans have made for this country were honored as 52 Southwest Florida Veterans traveled to Washington, D.C. for the first Honor Flight of the Collier County chapter. Honor Flight Network, an organization established in 2005, provides war veterans a free trip to Washington to visit the National World War II Memorial and other memorials in the nation's capital. Guardians fly with the veterans on every flight providing assistance and helping veterans have a safe, memorable and rewarding experience.

HonorflightServing as inspiration to this important event, local community citizens decided a local chapter was needed. In just five short weeks, the chapter was established, funds were raised and local veterans and guardians were invited to participate - just in time for Veteran's Day! All of this would not have been possible without the many people in Collier County who stepped up to help our veterans, including Arthrex's own Purchasing Card Administrator, Linda Valentine, who serves as secretary on the board of the local chapter.

"I have been privileged to serve on the Board of Collier County's first Honor Flight organization," said Linda. "Our first flight, which was comprised of 52 veterans, had 42 from WWII and 10 from the Korean Conflict. Arthrex has been very generous to us by agreeing to support us with a donation, and allowing our employees to volunteer."

Linda invited her team members to participate in welcoming the veterans home. "Our department took an afternoon as a team-building exercise and made home-made cookies for the veterans to snack on. As they returned to the Fort Myers terminal, many shouted to me how much they enjoyed the cookies."

Andrew Rzasa, Card& Travel Programs Manager, took part in the welcoming reception to honor the veterans. "I can say without hesitation that the honor to stand and welcome that flight home was all mine. It was an incredibly humbling and uplifting experience that I sincerely hope others will partake in for future flights. Just an incredible experience!"

HonorFlightToday and every day, Arthrex is committed to supporting our veterans through ongoing charitable initiatives in the community, such as the Honor Flight. The next flight will be in spring 2014, and Linda plans to go as a guardian for one of our veterans.

"For myself, I can only say it is the absolute best thing I have ever been involved with," she says.

SantosSandy Santos, senior employee relations specialist at AMIE, had the opportunity to be"Principal for the Day" at Corkscrew Elementary on November 8, 2013. As principal, Sandy worked with teachers to set goals for the school year, anchor the morning news, and award prizes to students. She toured the school and shadowed teachers.

"I met several children of Arthrex employees," says Sandy. "They were very proud, and of course, because I was on the news in the morning, I was a pseudo-celebrity to them!"

Sandy also enjoyed utilizing her employee relations and leadership skills to advise the school's principal, Ronna Smith. "We discussed how to gain her employees' trust, accountability, and how to provide them with the tools they need to succeed. I felt that I was able to contribute to her professional development."

In return, Principal Smith visited Arthrex for the day on Tuesday, December 10, 2013, to shadow Sandy in the HR department.

Sandywithkids"She toured our building and saw the importance of the HR walk-throughs, as employees continuously approached us with questions and concerns," said Sandy. "She spent time with Arthrex's Mike Koszewnik, talking about training and teaching approaches. They also spent time talking about her desire to establish a STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering & Math) academy in her school and potentially have a selected group of little scientists visit our facility. As you can imagine, she is looking to establish a strong bond with Arthrex for the good of her students."

LillieSimmonsAs the No. 1 killer of American men and women, heart disease affects the lives of many Arthrex employees and their families. For this reason, Arthrex is a proud local cause sponsor of the Go Red For Women® movement, among other American Heart Association initiatives. GoRedForWomen

Arthrex has its own"heart hero" in Medical Education Coordinator Lillie Simmons. After discovering last year that she had an undiagnosed atrial septal defect from birth, Lillie underwent surgery to repair a nickel-sized hole in her heart. As an avid runner before and after surgery, Lillie is feeling better than ever. In fact, just 10 days after her surgery, she ran the Moe's 5K and just four short months later, she ran her first half-marathon in Miami!

Lillie has become especially passionate about encouraging women to listen to their hearts and is a local spokesperson for the Go Red For Women campaign. Read more about Lillie's story featured in Life in Naples (pg. 56) and in a video produced by Arthrex that was featured at the 2013 Southwest Florida Go Red For Women Luncheon.

Paul Mackin Experiences Arthrex's Mission First-Hand

Alex MackinAccording to the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons (AAOS), each year, more than 3.5 million children ages 14 and younger are treated for sports-related injuries, making the prevention of such injuries a top priority in the sports and healthcare industries.

Our mission of "Helping Surgeons Treat Their Patients Better" extends to even the youngest patient athletes. Arthrex is a Champion-Level Corporate Supporter of the STOP Sports Injuries (Sports Trauma and Overuse Prevention) educational initiative, which raises awareness and provides education on injury reduction in young athletes.

Midwest Senior Regional Sales Manager Paul Mackin has experienced our mission in work firsthand, when his son suffered a knee injury that could have potentially meant the end of the freshman's promising high school football career.

"Although it was more than four years ago, during his first football season in high school, it seems like just yesterday that my son Alex was beginning his journey back from reconstructive knee surgery," says Paul. "The path would be a long one, but it would feature the expert skills of a prominent sports medicine surgeon and the utilization of Arthrex implants, instruments and techniques.

"As a freshman at St. Louis University High School in St. Louis in 2009, Alex was a two-way starter and feature player on his football team. Starting at middle linebacker and runningback, he was intimately involved in every play. During the middle of the season, playing in their sixth game, the reality of how unforgiving this collision sport can be was recognized during one tragic play. Near the end of the first half of play, his team trailed their all-time arch rival CBC High School by one point and with approximately one minute left in the half, they were facing a long 3rd and 4 near midfield. Already having a very busy game, Alex had scored two touchdowns, kicked both extra points and led the team with eight solo tackles. He seemed to be everywhere. The offense, enjoying good success running the ball, decided to call Alex's number again to generate the needed yardage and keep the momentum in SLUH's favor. Taking a pitch out to the left Alex rumbled past the line of scrimmage headed for what looked to be a first down when the opposing team's cornerback came up to stop him. Up to that point in the game, Alex had been taking advantage of his size and running more like a traditional fullback making every tackler pay for their work. But on this play, the cornerback, tired of getting run over, went out of his way to tackle low and dove directly into Alex's knee. A hush fell over the crowd as soon as he was hit. Everyone watching knew it did not look good as Alex lay on the field not moving.

Alex Mackin"The result, as it would turn out, was catastrophic. One tackle, one fateful play that would now alter the next year of his Alex's life and create the biggest challenge he had ever faced in his young life. But in the process, it would also allow him to appreciate what it meant to receive the highest levels of orthopaedic sports medicine care and understand why his dad always said he worked for the greatest, most innovative orthopaedic company in the world!

"After being carried off the field it was determined that the injury was season ending. An MRI and physical examination revealed that Alex had torn his ACL, MCL and most likely both medial and lateral menisci. A dreaded combination of injuries and a harsh reality that he would no longer take his health for granted. Surgery was scheduled with the desire to optimize the latest techniques and implant technologies to give Alex the best chance of recovery.

"When that season arrived in the fall of 2010, Alex was back on the field and well on his way to becoming the player he had been. It was not long thereafter that Alex was completing his senior season and finishing as the leading tackler in the conference and being named First Team All-Conference and Missouri All-District at outside linebacker. He was also named Academic All-State. This resulting success and notoriety enabled his athletic story to continue with recruiting trips to many smaller colleges and universities throughout the Midwest. After choosing what he felt was the best fit, Alex decided to attend Denison University in Ohio to continue his football passion and dream.

"We are happy to report that this past season Alex completed his freshman year of collegiate athletics, playing outside linebacker for Denison. Thanks in great part to Arthrex innovation, Alex has no residual problems with his knee and in fact says, 'I don't ever think about it until someone brings it up. As far as I'm concerned, it's better than the knee I was born with.' A true testament to the Arthrex mission: Helping Surgeons Treat Their Patients Better. And in this case, helping a surgeon to treat an employee's son better! Thank you to each employee who plays an integral part in Arthrex's product and surgical technique innovations!"

AMAP graduatesIn late 2009, the Arthrex Manufacturing Apprentice Program (AMAP) was introduced and the program has now reached a significant milestone: the inaugural apprentices have graduated and are now full-time machinists at Arthrex! Congratulations to Jeff Bentley, Frank Peralta and Enea Ruci on this tremendous accomplishment!

AMAP is a four-year machine skills training program. The program is registered through the State of Florida's Department of Education, and is the only INJ (Individual Non Joint) program in the state, which means that Arthrex is the sole sponsor of the apprenticeship. Arthrex Manufacturing Training Supervisor Mike Koszewnik developed the AMAP curriculum and, along with his team, ensures the necessary components of the program are in place to maintain the accreditation.

Jeff, Frank and Enea invested more than 8,000 hours of daily on-the-job training and cross-training in the various manufacturing departments, as well as six hours per week of classroom instruction. As successful graduates of the program, each will be awarded a certificate from the State of Florida, which is equivalent to a journeyman's card that is recognized throughout the United States.

AMAP graduatesAMAP was launched during a time when other companies were downsizing their workforce and putting internal career advancement programs on hold. Arthrex recognized the rising need for skilled machinists and made the significant investment in a program that would help support our unprecedented growth and expansion into the future.

Arthrex adds four new apprentices to the program each year, and generally looks to accept two Arthrex employees seeking growth and career advancement and two candidates from the community.

Arthrex's first Lead Development Program (LDP) participants graduated on June 3, 2014. The four to six-month program was introduced to Arthrex Manufacturing's Packaging and Boxing Departments to allow personnel an additional opportunity for professional growth and development and to potentially obtain production coordinator and senior boxing specialist positions based on business needs. Currently, the LDP is a requirement for the production coordinator and boxing coordinator positions.

Harvy Barrios, Yassel Rodriguez, Yuliet Vichot Gonzalez, Sadrac Joseph, Lazaro Pera Carratala, Jorge Vega and Sam Somzit all successfully completed all four of the LDP segments and assessments as well as pre-assessments to enter the program. LDP graduates

The purpose of the Lead Development Program (LDP) is to:
  • Proactively support the need for well-trained and qualified leaders (temporarily or permanently)
  • Provide candidates with the tools that they will need to progress within the company
  • Help employees develop skills that will be useful to the team, even if lead positions are not available immediately

The first segment focuses on the day-to-day issues the participants will face once promoted. Human Resources, Environmental Health & Safety, Lean Manufacturing and GMP/CFR are all covered by Arthrex Manufacturing trainers well versed in each area.

The second segment focuses on leadership training and is taught entirely by Arthrex's corporate training team. In this segment, the participants are taught some of the basic foundational skills they will need to become leaders within Arthrex. Team Building and Values, Accountability and Giving and Accepting Feedback are just some of the classes which are taught. All the participants also attend the two-day, 7 Habits of Highly Effective People course during the second segment.

Segments three and four are dedicated to on-the-job training. During this time, the participants shadow employees who are already functioning as production coordinators and boxing coordinators. As the participants demonstrate the skills they have acquired, they will be allowed to fully perform the function for which they are training while being closely overseen by the area supervisors.

Arthrex’s Lead Development Program’s second group has just begun taking these courses to help them lead, motivate, encourage, and provide them with a greater understanding of the business and a sense of teamwork to help achieve organizational goals.

Educating Our Young Minds and Future Workforce

intern panelArthrex is proud to support educative programs with schools and organizations in the community that provide our young minds and future workforce with positive experiences to learn and grow. As part of this commitment, we also offer an internship and co-op program during the summer to give students the opportunity to gain valuable practical experience and enhance their professional development. An internship is a temporary position with an emphasis on on-the-job training rather than merely employment, and a co-op is a type of internship program that enables college students to receive career training with pay as they work with professionals in their major fields of study.

This summer,
Arthrex hosted 50 interns and 5 co-ops within a wide variety of departments and teams.
The students participated in a formal luncheon - complete with games and ice breakers - so they could mingle and get to know each other in a more relaxed, social setting. They also benefited from a well-received intern panel where Arthrex employees volunteer their time answering questions and imparting knowledge and advice. This year’s panel members included:

William Blum, Executive Chef;  Pascal Cote-Julien, Financial Systems Analyst;  Cassandra Engeldinger, Digital Communications Specialist;  Chloe Erb, Medical Education Administrative Assistant;  Mike Francis, Manufacturing Tech Specialist;  Mary Gay, Legal Administrative Assistant;  Melissa Hirschberg, Clinical Research Associate;  Rosa Martinez, Southern Hemisphere Operations Manager;  Beau Rollins, Sterilization Engineer;  Hayley Wonka, Associate Employee Relations Specialist.

intern panelAs Arthrex continues to grow and expand, the internship and co-op program is really a fantastic way to evaluate prospective employees for future positions.  Many departments such as engineering utilize internship programs with local schools throughout the year and have filled needed positions with candidates who demonstrate a strong cultural and professional fit with our organization.

Kristin Bartlett, Digital Communications Associate, transitioned to full time employment this past May, following a year-long internship with the Communications Team . "Sometimes I still think of how lucky I am to have been an intern here at Arthrex," Kristin said. "This experience has provided me with the ability to learn new skills, meet wonderful mentors and friends, and build the foundation for my future. I’ll never forget the day Kerrin Levine called me with a job offer; my first real job offer. All of my hard work had paid off. Transitioning from an intern to a full-time employee was, by far, the best graduation gift anyone could have ever given me and I couldn’t have asked for a better company to work for."

Hayley Wonka, Associate Employee Relations Specialist, also transitioned to full time employment this past May after a six month internship with Human Resources. Her story is unique in that she was studying biology at Ave Maria University. "Even though my background was in biology, HR truly struck my interest during this internship experience," Hayley said. "I gained valuable training from my supervisor and other team members within the company and received positive feedback about pursuing a career in HR. I believe that hard work and an open mind to try new things will lead to amazing opportunities, and I am truly thankful to be part of such a great company."

We are proud of all employees who take the time to host interns and co-ops in their departments during the summer and throughout the year, and who also participate in job shadowing programs, volunteer as mentors or assist with hosting school groups at
Arthrex. Together, we are Making People Better in our community and around the world.

During the Leadership Dinner, the Presidential Leadership Award is presented to an individual who has achieved excellence and demonstrated three key qualities throughout the year: leadership, dedication and contribution.
While so many are deserving of this esteemed award, Jim Hamer, Global Director of Quality Assurance and Regulatory Affairs, was selected to receive the 2014 Presidential Leadership Award. Arthrex Founder and President Reinhold Schmieding personally presented Jim with the award while sharing the highlights of his outstanding career accomplishments at Arthrex.
Jim Hamer and Reinhold Schmieding
"As the leader of Arthrex's Quality Assurance team for more than 12 years, Jim has built the department from a handful of engineers to a global team of more than 75 Quality and Regulatory team members," said Reinhold. "Jim has consolidated all of the individual Quality Systems at all of the Arthrex facilities into a single, global Quality Assurance System, all reporting in through him and his team. Jim is tireless in his efforts to continue to improve and streamline the Global QA Systems, and the savings in manpower and resources, both internally and externally, we've seen under his leadership are almost immeasurable."

Congratulations to Jim on his
many accomplishments and well-deserved recognition!

Arthrex Recognizes Employees for Years of Service with Special Honoree Charlie Cremin Celebrating 20 Years

Arthrex hosted its annual Years of Service awards ceremony for Inc. and AMI on Tuesday, October 7 and recognized an impressive total of 118 employees celebrating five years of service, 21 employees celebrating 10 years, eight celebrating 15 years and an amazing 20 years of service from one employee everyone knows and loves - Maintenance Technician II Charlie Cremin!

Charlie CreminDuring Reinhold's presentation of Charlie's Years of Service plaque, he spoke from his heart about how he met Charlie more than 20 years ago on a fishing charter that Charlie was working on at the time. Charlie asked Reinhold if there might be a job at Arthrex for him and Reinhold gave him his business card. A year later, after meeting Reinhold again on his charter, Reinhold hired Charlie on in inventory and the rest is history. Over the years, Charlie has held several jobs at Arthrex, including working in Receiving driving a forklift, assembly in the machine shop, performing maintenance duties on the Facilities team and in recent years, Charlie has taken on the role of lead shuttle driver for employees and guests traveling between buildings on the Inc. campus.

"Charlie is the best ambassador for Arthrex with his friendly demeanor and warm smile," said Reinhold. "Throughout his 20 years at Arthrex, he has always come ready to work with a smile on his face each day. Charlie knows just about all of our employees and always does his best to make the shuttle ride fun and enjoyable, including telling our guests about the history of Arthrex."

Charlie's knack for names is in fact, inspired by Reinhold.

Charlie Cremin and Reinhold Schmieding"It's been a pleasure working with Reinhold - he's always led by example. I've learned from Reinhold the importance of being personable, being a good listener and remembering people's names. Just to see his work ethic and drive over the years has been amazing."

It seems Charlie has also learned from Reinhold that persistence pays off. Reinhold shared how impressed he was that when Charlie took his 20-year trip to Europe over the summer, he made it a point to stop by the new GmbH office in Freiham, Germany and waited for two hours to see him while Reinhold was in a meeting.  "I would have waited a lot longer," says Charlie. "It's always been a goal of mine to see Germany and it was an exciting time to be there with the new office opening."

Charlie says what he has liked best about working for Arthrex over the last 20 years is he's had the opportunity to do a wide variety of jobs and has gotten to meet so many guests and people at all levels in the company – from new hires to VPs.

Since last January alone,
Arthrex has already
hired 367 new employees and we look forward to celebrating the success of many more employees in the years to come. Thanks to all Arthrex employees for their dedication to Arthrex and for the contributions made each and every day to healthcare product innovation and Making People Better.

FowlerKevin Fowler, AMI employee relations specialist, had the opportunity to be "Principal for a Day" at Estates Elementary School on October 30, 2014. As principal, Kevin toured the school, shadowed teachers and met students. He shares more about his experience:

"I had a wonderful opportunity to participate in the Principal for a Day program at Estates Elementary School, not far from our AMI East facilities. I was there to shadow Principal Sheryl Rogers and to participate in the regular activities taking place that day. The day started with announcements led by some of the students at the school. As we toured the school and the classrooms, I was amazed at how respectful the students were to the Principal and the 'Principal for a Day.' The students were genuinely excited to see us come into their classrooms and were not shy to introduce themselves. I was also able to sit in on a collaborative planning session with the 2nd Grade teachers. This is something relatively new at the school which gives the teachers a chance to plan their upcoming week together and ensure that they are consistent with the lessons and the goals they want to achieve."

Overall, the experience was very enriching. One thing in particular stood out for me that day - when students found out that I work for Arthrex they were quick to ask if I knew their uncle, mother or brother. I received a similar reaction from the school staff members. It is amazing to see the impact and reach that Arthrex's reputation has on our community!"

Arthrex is proud to support the local community and its schools. In addition to participating in “Principal for the Day” programs, employees serve on various school advisory boards, attend Superintendent CEO Briefings, and provide teachers and students with internships and job shadowing opportunities.

Daniel ReynaWhile growing up in Immokalee, FL then attending Florida Gulf Coast University, Data Coordinator Daniel Reyna always imagined he’d begin his career and one day raise a family in his home state. But when Danny graduated and wasn’t able to find a job locally, he took the opportunity to move to Charlotte, NC where the company he had been interning for offered him a position.

“When I graduated in
2008, the job market was tough,” said Danny. “You have a college degree and an expectation you will get a job right away. I had a lot of friends struggling with this. I was fortunate to be offered a job in my field, even if it was out of state.”

He spent the next few years working in Charlotte, NC and Myrtle Beach, SC, but always had a desire to come back to Florida.

Last April, Danny was able to do just that thanks to
Arthrex’s hiring boom. Starting as a temp. on the Meetings & Events team, Danny soon earned a full-time position as data coordinator and was able to permanently relocate back to Southwest Florida just as he had hoped.

Daniel ReynaThen in the fall of 2014, Danny received exciting news of an opportunity to be part of Governor Rick Scott’s re-election campaign. Danny was selected to represent Arthrex and share his story at many local events, including the Jobs Jamboree held at Arthrex last December and Governor Scott’s official inauguration ceremony held on the steps of Florida’s capital in Tallahassee on January 6. Danny spoke to the crowd of nearly 4,000 about how the growth of Florida's job market over the last four years positively impacted his life directly.

“Arthrex’s growth has been a testament to the economy improving in Florida and throughout the country overall,” said Danny. “I was happy to be able to show support for and recognize Arthrex through these speaking opportunities. I love Arthrex and believe in the good we do helping people.”

As part of his inauguration speech, Governor Scott shared one of his goals is for Florida to compete globally for jobs by investing in workforce training programs that focus on science, technology, engineering and math (STEM). He recognized
Arthrex and other companies for their support of STEM and technical programs.

Three days later, Governor Scott visited the Lorenzo Walker Institute of Technology (LWIT) in Naples and praised
Arthrex for its support of centers like LWIT and iTech in Immokalee, and also announced a proposed $20 million allocation of state funds for technical centers.

Arthrex proudly contributes to STEM and technical programs and hires its skilled graduates that are so vital to keeping Arthrex competitive in the global marketplace.

Kyle ArmstrongArthrex Manufacturing Inc. The program, aimed at enhancing STEM education (science, technology, engineering, math), is part of a nationwide competition implemented to improve students' knowledge of renewable energy concepts. Each team received a kit with just a solar panel and a motor and the rest was up to the imagination of the students.

Kyle shared, "Being part of the young engineering process was quite interesting to see how their minds work and what ideas different teams came up with."

Kyle ArmstrongThe students have continued working on their cars and running tests as part of the engineering process. The winning team will go on to attend the district competition.

Thank you to Kyle, for representing Arthrex so well and bringing to life why STEM education is so important for students' futures.
